Description

What is Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome? Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD) describe problems associated with lower jaw movement and pain in the lower jaw joint. Temporomandibular Joint (or TMJ) is the joint connecting your jawbone to your skull. Common signs of TMD include: Pain and tenderness in and around the ear, jaw joint, face, or temples Frequent headaches and neck pain Pain and tenderness in and around the following areas: Ear Temples Face Jaw joint Experiencing grinding and clicking noises when you chew, open your mouth or yawn What Causes TMD? Joint diseases like arthritis and injuries are the most common causes of TMD. There is sometimes a link between the disorder and stress, however, it’s unclear if stress is a cause or symptom of TMD. It is believed that Bruxism (teeth clenching and grinding) as well as chronic head and neck tension can make symptoms of TMD worse. Pain Free Treating your TMD When mild, symptoms of TMD usually come and go. In this case, consider a self care routine including warm compresses on your chewing muscles and gentle massages to relax your jaw. When you rest, ensure you slightly part your lips, keeping a small space between your upper and lower teeth. Some cases of TMD are acute, causing chronic symptoms that should be treated right away. These symptoms include: Pain Problems eating, swallowing and talking. At Pickwick Dental we evaluate symptoms, conduct a comprehensive exam and take radiographic images of the joints in order to evaluate TMD. The treatment concentrates on reduction or elimination of pain and discomfort as well as prevention of recurrences of the abovementioned symptoms. The treatment usually starts with fabrication of a custom fitted bruxism appliance for you. We then monitor the appliance over time to ensure it is effective. In some situations, we work with other medical or dental specialists in Mississauga including oral surgeons, massage therapists, chiropractors, physiotherapists and family doctors. Together, we can eliminate your symptoms, relax your jaw muscles and prevent any more damage to your TMJ.
