The Optical Coherence Tomography -OCT Scan uses a state of the art machine that helps in identifying certain eye disease in its very early stages. Common conditions identified through regular OCT screening include: Age-Related Macular Degeneration(ARMD) Age related Macular degeneration causes the gradual breakdown of the RPE layer of retina at the Macula. The retina has 10 layers and an OCT scan can identify defective layer very early in the disease process. An OCT can identify this condition and discriminate between wet and dry disease ARMD. This machine is used to monitor the disease progress if you are undergoing treatment for such a condition. Unfortunately the risk of developing Macular degeneration increases with age and it is the most common cause of vision loss in individuals over fifty. This scan is a must for everyone over 50 years of age once every two years.
