Description
What are Dental Implants? Unlike fillings or crowns that are bonded to the tooth, dental implants are titanium screws that are surgically implanted into the jawbone below the gum line to function as the root of a missing tooth. After the implant is placed, an artificial, natural-looking tooth is attached to it. Over time, your bone and gum will continue to grow around the implant, providing it with extra stability. The Procedure of Dental Implants An implant from our Mississauga dental office requires two pieces; the screw for the abutment and the tooth replacement, either a crown, bridge, or denture. After a comprehensive exam and thorough review of your medical history, your Mississauga dentist will schedule you for surgery which is the first step of the implant process. The dentist places the titanium screw into the jawbone, right below the gums. Usually, this process takes about 1-2 hours for each implant to be placed. However, your Mississauga dentist will see you back in 2 weeks to make sure the area is healing well. Following the procedure, there is usually a waiting period of approximately 4 months to allow the area to heal and the screw to integrate with the bone and gums. While the four months may seem like a lengthy period, it is required to ensure that the dental implant process is a success. Once the gums have healed and the implant is integrated into the bone and gums, the dentist will place the abutment and tooth replacement onto the implanted screw.
